Editing & Proofreading

Editing and proofreading from people who read for a living

A manuscript usually needs more than one kind of edit, and they happen in a particular order. We help you work out which ones your book needs, then match you with an editor who knows your genre.

    About This Service

Four different jobs that are often confused

Developmental editing looks at structure: whether the argument holds, whether the middle sags, whether the ending delivers. Line editing works on the sentences. Copyediting fixes grammar and consistency and produces a style sheet. Proofreading is the last check, done on the typeset pages, when errors are cheapest to catch and easiest to miss.
Most authors do not need all four. We read a sample chapter first and tell you honestly where the book stands. Sometimes that means a lighter edit than you expected, and occasionally it means suggesting another draft before any edit is worth paying for.

    What Our Authors Say

    Rated 5 out of 5
Cover, layout and the Amazon set-up were all handled by one team, which saved me weeks of chasing. Files arrived when they said they would.

They told me my second chapter was doing the work of my fourth, and they were right. The finished book reads far more cleanly.

I had never worked with an editor and was nervous about losing my voice. The notes were sharp but never took the book away from me.

    FAQs

    Editing & Proofreading FAQs

Copyediting improves clarity, grammar and consistency in your draft. Proofreading is the final check for typos and layout errors after the book has been typeset. They are done at different stages by design.
If you are unsure whether the structure works, probably yes, particularly for a first book. If beta readers praise the story and flag only small things, you may be ready for a line edit instead.
As a rough guide, a copyedit of an 80,000-word manuscript takes two to four weeks, and developmental work takes longer because it involves thought rather than correction. We agree dates with you before starting.
No. We aim to make your sentences clearer without making them sound like someone else’s. Where we think a stylistic choice is hurting the book, we explain why and leave the decision with you.
Whichever suits your readers. Tell us your target market and we will apply it consistently and record the decision in the style sheet.
Yes, including footnotes, references and permissions queries. For technical subjects we ask editors with relevant background, and we will say so if we cannot find the right one.
Reject it. Tracked changes exist so that you stay in control, and you will hear no argument from us.
Copyeditors flag claims that look wrong and query dates, names and figures, but they are not fact-checkers. Where accuracy matters legally or medically, responsibility stays with the author, and we can quote for separate fact-checking.
