Children’s books that are as good to read aloud as to look at
A picture book is a short, exact form: usually 32 pages, a few hundred words and a rhythm that works at bedtime. We help you shape the text, find an illustrator whose style suits it and prepare the pages for print and screen.

About This Service
Thirty-two pages leave very little room for error
Picture books are usually 32 pages because printers fold paper in sections of 16. After the title page and endpapers, that leaves around 14 spreads in which the story must unfold. Text rarely runs beyond 600 words, and every page turn should give the child something new to see or to anticipate.
We start with the manuscript and a page plan, sometimes cutting far more than authors expect. Then comes illustration: character sketches, a rough storyboard and finished artwork in your chosen style. Once the pages are set, we prepare files for print, including bleed and gutter allowances, and an ebook edition if you want one.
Manuscript editing and a page-by-page plan
Illustrator selection and art direction
Cover and interior layout for print
Fixed-layout ebook if required
Why Credo
Why Authors Choose Our Children’s Book Publishing
Illustration that fits
Watercolour, digital, collage or cartoon: we match the artist to the story.
Written for the right age
Vocabulary, length and themes checked against your target age group.
Made to be kept
Hardcover and sewn-binding options for books that will be read many times.
Thirty-two is standard, though 24 and 40 are used too. Pages come in sections, so adding a single extra spread can add several blank pages if it is not planned.
Rights are agreed in writing before work begins. Most authors want the right to publish the illustrations in the book, with other rights, such as merchandise, negotiated separately. We make these terms clear in your quote.
It can, but rhyme that is forced or uneven is a common reason picture books are turned down. If your text rhymes, we check the metre aloud, not only on the page.
