Formatting & Interior Design

Book formatting that disappears, so the reader only notices the story

Good interior design is mostly invisible: comfortable margins, a typeface that suits the text, chapters that begin where the eye expects. We typeset print and ebook editions and check them against printer and retailer rules.

    About This Service

The decisions readers feel but never see

Line length, leading, the depth of the top margin, whether a chapter opens on a right-hand page: none of it is decoration. Poorly set text tires the eye within a few pages, and readers blame the book rather than the typesetting.
We choose a trim size that suits your genre and printing budget, set the text in a typeface with the right character, and deal with widows, orphans, running heads and page numbering. Tables, images and footnotes are handled consistently. For ebooks, we build clean reflowable EPUB files that behave properly on small screens and older e-readers.

    What Our Authors Say

    Rated 5 out of 5
They told me my second chapter was doing the work of my fourth, and they were right. The finished book reads far more cleanly.

I had never worked with an editor and was nervous about losing my voice. The notes were sharp but never took the book away from me.

Cover, layout and the Amazon set-up were all handled by one team, which saved me weeks of chasing. Files arrived when they said they would.

    FAQs

    Formatting & Interior Design FAQs

For fiction, 5 × 8 in, 5.25 × 8 in and 5.5 × 8.5 in are common. Non-fiction often uses 6 × 9 in. Smaller trims mean more pages and a higher print cost per copy, so we talk it through with your budget in mind.
Yes. Kindle accepts EPUB, so we build one clean EPUB and test it in Amazon’s previewer as well as in Apple Books and Kobo.
Word is built for editing, not typesetting. It can produce a readable PDF, but it handles hyphenation, widows and orphans and ebook conversion poorly, which is why retailers often reject or mangle Word files.
Reflowable ebooks let the reader change the font and size, and the text rewraps. Fixed-layout keeps pages exactly as designed, which suits picture books and cookbooks but is harder to read on small screens.
Yes. Please send images at 300 dpi at their intended size where possible, and tell us early if the book has complex tables so we can plan the layout.
Small corrections are expected and included during proof review. Rewriting passages after layout can change the page count and the spine width, so we recommend finishing editing first.
Printers work in multiples of pages, often eight or sixteen, and we adjust the layout so you are not paying for blank pages unnecessarily.
Yes. We set the copyright page and place your ISBN and barcode details. We can also help you obtain an ISBN if you do not have one.
