Book Cover Design

Book cover design that works at full size and at 100 pixels wide

Most readers first meet your book as a thumbnail on a retailer page. We design covers that hold up there first, then look right in print, with the spine, back cover and barcode all worked out.

    About This Service

A cover has two jobs: stop the scroll, then tell the truth about the book

A good cover promises a particular kind of reading experience. A cosy mystery that looks like a literary thriller will attract the wrong readers, and they will say so in their reviews. So we begin with the genre, the shelf your book will sit on and three or four titles it will be compared with, before anyone opens a design file.
Then comes the practical side. Spine width depends on page count and paper stock, print covers need a 3 mm bleed, and the same artwork needs a flatter, brighter version for ebook stores. We handle all of it, so the files your printer or retailer receives are ready to use.

    What Our Authors Say

    Rated 5 out of 5
I had never worked with an editor and was nervous about losing my voice. The notes were sharp but never took the book away from me.

Cover, layout and the Amazon set-up were all handled by one team, which saved me weeks of chasing. Files arrived when they said they would.

They told me my second chapter was doing the work of my fourth, and they were right. The finished book reads far more cleanly.

    FAQs

    Book Cover Design FAQs

It depends on whether you need a front cover only or a full wrap, how much custom illustration is involved and how many revision rounds you want. We quote after a short conversation about the book, and we would rather give you a firm figure than a vague range.
Initial concepts usually arrive within a few working days of your brief. The total depends mostly on how quickly feedback comes back. A typical project is finished in two to three weeks.
A front cover is the image readers see online. A full wrap includes the spine and back cover as one print-ready file, sized to your printer’s template. If your book will be printed, you need the wrap.
Technically it is the front cover alone, exported as an RGB image at about 1600 × 2560 pixels. We supply it with the print files so the two always match.
You do, for publishing your book, once the project is paid for. Where we use licensed stock images, we pass on the licence terms in writing so you know exactly what you may do with the artwork.
Yes. We will check the resolution first, and if it is too low for print we will tell you before design begins rather than afterwards.
Not exactly. Screens use light and print uses ink, so deep blues and bright greens in particular shift. We design in the right colour space for each and recommend a printed proof when colour matters.
That is common. Tell us what the book is about and who it is for, and show us a few covers you admire or dislike. It is usually enough to start.
